Brass Windows

Brass Windows

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc know for its malleability and color. In homes, brass is most commonly used for plumbing, electricity, and decoration. Because zinc and copper are relatively abundant, brass is much cheaper than gold, but still offers a similar ornamental beauty. Brass windows have a low melting point, and so they can be cast into shapes easily, making them useful for not only decoration and plumbing in the home, but also musical instruments. Also because it is easily shaped, it is useful when making latches with interlocking pieces, and hinges that can be attached to windows or doors, providing the homeowner with safety from intruders and the ability to open the window, allowing a piece of the outside world to come into the home.

Brass Window Locks

Window locks are commonly made of brass because it is an inexpensive yet durable metal. Brass windows can be purchased from hardware stores or from specialty shops that deal in more intricate designs. Metalworkers can create pieces of their own design or specific designs of the decorator. Of course these handmade pieces will be more expensive than those found at the hardware, but a decorator may find that by getting a more personalized addition to the home will be worth the price. The locks are easily installed into the top or side of the window. When properly installed the locks prevent trespassers from entering the home while appealing to the aesthetics of those inside.

Brass Window Handles

Brass window handles are both decorative and functional. People have been experimenting with different combinations of copper, zinc, and various impurities for centuries, the results have been brass of many different colors. These colors can be matched to flatter the color of the window, furniture, flooring, and drapes of a room. For instance, a room decorated in light colors might benefit from a very light and shiny version of brass; a darker form of brass might compliment more richly decorated rooms, rooms with much mahogany for example. A homeowner or decorator can also decide to have less functional pieces attached to the home. Brass made into artistic shapes can be used purely for decoration and beautification. These pieces are most commonly attached to the outside of the home and are usually flat pieces of the metal. Because the metal resists corrosion, they do not require much maintenance to retain their beauty.
