Double Hung Windows

Double hung windows are the most common type of window found in homes today. Double hung windows are opened by sliding the bottom half of the window up and can also be opened by sliding the upper half down. Because only half of the window can be open at any one time, double hung windows do not allow as much ventilation as other window types, such as casement, which can be opened completely. An advantage to double hung windows is that you can increase the air circulation in your home by opening the top portion of the windows on one side of the house and the lower portion of the windows on the cooler side of the house. Warmer air will rise out of the opened upper windows and draw cooler air in through the opened bottom windows.

Double Hung Replacement Windows

Double hung replacement windows are a great choice for windows of traditional lengths and sizes. When choosing replacement windows, it is important to consider the quality, appearance and price of the windows. Modern double hung replacement windows are available in a variety of finishes and with various numbers of panes to fit any need. They are also available with a number of different treatments to limit harmful ultraviolet light from entering your home. Look for windows that are durably designed and easy to operate.

Repairing Double Hung Windows

These long-lasting windows are generally problem and maintenance free. Over time, however, the windows can develop a tendency to slide closed when open. Older double hung windows which use a pulley and weight system can become loose when the ropes stretch or break. To correct this problem, have the ropes and weights inspected and replaced or repaired as needed. Modern double hung windows can begin sliding when there is a problem with the springs that hold the window in place. These springs can be adjusted to correct the sliding problem.

Sashes
The sash of the window can also contribute to difficulty opening or closing your window. Never force a stuck window. Instead, examine the sash both inside and outside. A stuck window is often the result of a sash which has been painted over. To break the seal of the paint, run a sharp utility knife between the sash and the window stop. You can also attempt to pry the window open using a pry bar. It is also possible to use a hammer and wooden block to free the window. Use caution and care anytime you are working on a double hung window to avoid damaging the window, frame or sash.
