Venetian Blinds

Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds, or horizontal blinds, covers a window or a door internally and blocks heat from coming in or leaving and blocks light to varying degrees. They consist of many horizontal slats, usually metal or vinyl, connected by string which can be rotated almost 180 degrees to prevent the entrance of light or raised so that almost the entire window is clear. The blinds are rotated by a connecting knob, cord or wand and the blinds are raised and lowered by a separate string that can be either on the same side or the opposite. Venetian blinds are sometimes made of wood as well but those are also called wood blinds.

Wood Venetian Blinds

Woven-wood blinds are decorative wood slats that are strung together with a colored material to make an almost solid blind. These roll up or fold from view and are known for being energy efficient and giving greater light control. They are also less expensive than shutters.

How To Clean Venetian Blinds

Keeping Venetian blinds clean isn’t necessarily a difficult task. Where you live, the amount of traffic in and out of your home and the type of ventilation system in your home all play factors in how often it needs to be cleaned. In other words, the more dust in your home, the more often your Venetians will need to be cleaned. They should be dusted at least every other day to avoid having to take them down for an even more thorough cleaning. Moisture will cause dust to adhere to them so it’s best to keep them as dry as possible. That includes rain and the occasional messy houseguest. Eventually the dust will no longer be so easy to remove and it will be necessary to take them down to clean. First, put the slats in the fully open position so they are easier to clean. Cover the bottom of your bathtub with heavy towels (or several layered towels will do) so the Venetians don’t scratch up your tub. Fill the tub with about 6 inches of warm water and use a mild soap and using a clean washcloth clean each slat individually. As a warning, the slats are relatively sharp so it may be a good idea to wear thick rubber gloves to avoid being cut. Once you are done washing, drain the water and then turn on the shower. Run cold water over your blinds for about five minutes and they will be thoroughly rinsed.
